No worries - my wrap-ups are always late! These all sound great - and I've only read one of them. Demon Copperhead was also my #1 book of the year - absolutely stunning on audio! And I'd like to read a Dani Shapiro novel - I've only read her memoir.
Sounds like a great reading year - can't wait to see the nonfiction list!
I read Yellowface last year and enjoyed it but it wasn't a top read for me that year. I am listening to Demon Copperhead now and having a love-hate relationship with it.
I often have the hubris of thinking I've heard of all the books I want to read. I was wrong! There are so many on this list that are new to me that I'm adding to my TBR pile immediately.
Demon Copperhead! I resisted it for a while, but so glad I finally gave in. Not just beautifully written with a voice that is amazing in its authenticity, but also an important book for the times we live in. As we see more and more people on the margins making dubious political and dangerous personal life choices, this is the kind of book that helps us gain understanding and empathy.
Signal Fires..gorgeous fiction from one of my all time favorite authors. I read it late in 2022,and I’m ready for a re-read this year.
A couple of quick nonfiction recommendations for 2024: Living Resistance, by Kaitlin Curtice; Cacophony of Bone, by Kerri ni Dochartaigh; and The Comfort of Crows by Margaret Renkl. Looking forward to yours!
Ha, I totally forgot I ever said that (I assume you have it in writing, in a blog comment somewhere 😄), but I stand by i, and I’m glad to see your 2023 favorite here in early 2024. I finally got around to starting DEMON COPPERHEAD this week, and it already looks like it will be one of my favorite books of *this* year.
I absolutely loved Signal Fires and The Marriage Portrait. I’ve been meaning to read Yellowface and I Have Some Questions for You. Thanks for sharing your perspective on these books — some of which I never heard of. My TBR is groaning!

Hi Melissa, thank you for this amazing list of women writers.
I absolutely loved Signal Fires and The Marriage Portrait. I’ve been meaning to read Yellowface and I Have Some Questions for You. Thanks for sharing your perspective on these books — some of which I never heard of. My TBR is groaning!
I haven't read any of these but I want to read all of them now!
